Procedure for Torquing the Head Bolts

To ensure the proper torque of the head bolts, follow these steps:

1. Start by cleaning the threads of the head bolts and the bolt holes in the engine block using a suitable cleaning agent. This helps remove any dirt, debris, or old thread sealant that may interfere with the torque process.

2. Apply a thin layer of engine oil to the threads and washer surface of each head bolt. This lubricates the threads and ensures smooth tightening.

3. Begin torquing the head bolts in the specified sequence. It is crucial to follow the correct sequence to distribute the torque evenly across the cylinder head. Typically, the sequence starts from the center and works outward in a circular pattern.

4. For Stage 1, torque each head bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) using a torque wrench. Ensure that the torque is applied gradually and evenly.

5. Proceed to Stage 2 and torque each head bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm) using the same sequence.

6. Finally, move on to Stage 3 and torque each head bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm) following the specified sequence.

7. After completing the torque process, it is recommended to perform an additional 90-degree rotation on each head bolt in the same sequence. This ensures that the bolts are properly seated and provides an extra level of security.
