4G63 Head Bolt Torque Sequence: Proper Assembly for Engine Performance

About the 4G63 Engine

The 4G63 engine is a popular four-cylinder, turbocharged engine produced by Mitsubishi Motors. It has been used in various Mitsubishi models, including the Lancer Evolution, Eclipse, and Galant VR-4. Known for its performance and reliability, the 4G63 engine has become a favorite among car enthusiasts and tuners worldwide.

Head Bolt Torque Sequence for the 4G63 Engine

When it comes to assembling the cylinder head of the 4G63 engine, it is crucial to follow the correct torque sequence for the head bolts. This ensures proper distribution of clamping force and helps prevent any leaks or damage to the engine. Below is the recommended torque sequence for the head bolts of the 4G63 engine:

Bolt Number Torque Specification (ft. lbs.) Torque Specification (Nm)
1 22-25 30-34
2 22-25 30-34
3 22-25 30-34
4 22-25 30-34
5 22-25 30-34
6 22-25 30-34
7 22-25 30-34
8 22-25 30-34
9 22-25 30-34
10 22-25 30-34

Procedure for Torquing the Head Bolts

  1. Clean the threads of the head bolts and the bolt holes in the engine block using a suitable cleaning agent.
  2. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the threads of each head bolt.
  3. Start by tightening each head bolt to 14-17 ft. lbs. (19-23 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
  4. Next, tighten each head bolt to 22-25 ft. lbs. (30-34 Nm) in the same crisscross pattern.
  5. Repeat the tightening process, increasing the torque to the final specification of 22-25 ft. lbs. (30-34 Nm) for each head bolt.
  6. Double-check the torque of each head bolt to ensure they are all within the specified range.

Importance of Proper Torque Sequence

Following the correct torque sequence is essential for the 4G63 engine to maintain proper sealing and prevent any issues such as leaks or damage to the cylinder head. The crisscross pattern ensures even distribution of clamping force, minimizing the risk of warping or distortion. It is crucial to use a torque wrench and follow the specified torque values to ensure the head bolts are tightened to the correct specifications.

By following the recommended torque sequence and using the specified torque values, you can ensure the proper assembly of the cylinder head on your 4G63 engine. This will contribute to its overall performance, reliability, and longevity.
